Start with the everyday frustrations

Before choosing cabinet colors, write down what makes your kitchen difficult to use. Perhaps two people cannot prepare food comfortably, storage is hard to reach, or the island has become a place to leave everything. These details give the project a purpose beyond changing its appearance.

Separate what must improve from what would simply be nice to have. A clearer work surface may matter more to your household than adding seats. In a shared office kitchen, easy cleanup and keeping walkways clear may lead the conversation instead.

Decide what stays and what changes

Create a simple list of the cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring and painted surfaces you want to keep or replace. A photo of each wall helps explain how those elements meet. Include appliance dimensions if new appliances are part of your plan.

Changing the layout and refreshing finishes are different scopes of work. If you want to move a sink or change a wall, bring that up at the beginning so the project can be assessed before finish selections are finalized.

Compare the whole combination

Look at cabinet, countertop, tile and paint samples together in your own space. A photo can communicate a direction, but it does not show exactly how a finish will look next to your windows or under your lights. Note which details you like in each inspiration image instead of asking to copy an entire room.

  • Photograph the room from several corners.
  • List items to keep, replace and discuss.
  • Bring approximate dimensions and appliance information.
  • Identify your priorities and a budget range you feel comfortable discussing.
  • Explain when the kitchen must remain available.

Make the quote conversation specific

Ask what the proposed scope includes: preparation, removal, installation, finish work and cleanup. Discuss who selects and supplies materials, how changes will be documented, and which decisions are needed before scheduling. A useful quote begins with a shared understanding of the work.
