Why wood is in the conversation
In its 2026 kitchen research, Houzz reports that wood overtook white as the most selected cabinet color among surveyed renovating homeowners. This is a national survey of Houzz users, not a measure of what every Houston homeowner prefers. It offers a useful starting point for exploring a warmer kitchen.

Let the existing room guide the palette
For your Houston or Richmond home, start with the finishes that will remain. Place a wood sample beside the floor, countertop and wall color. Similar shades can feel harmonious, but they can also blur together; compare a lighter countertop or a painted section to give the wood a clear role.
You do not have to make every cabinet identical to use the idea. Consider whether a wood island, a pantry wall or the main cabinetry should be the focal point. A limited change may suit your goals better than replacing everything simply to follow a photograph.
Make the warmth useful
Imagine preparing a normal weeknight meal, unloading groceries and making coffee. Which items deserve a drawer near where you use them? Which appliances currently take over the countertop? Write those answers down before selecting a door style.
A beautiful cabinet front cannot solve storage that does not fit your belongings. Bring a list of the cookware, serving pieces and small appliances you want to store. Ask how the proposed layout would accommodate them and which existing cabinets could remain.
- Compare wood samples in morning and evening light.
- Photograph the flooring and countertops you plan to keep.
- List three storage problems the renovation should solve.
- Separate your preferred look from your must-have changes.
Turn the inspiration into a clear scope
Ask for a conversation about cabinet work, surfaces, preparation and painting as separate parts of the project. If you are also considering quartz or tile, review those samples at the same time so the finished room feels considered.
